1. How do I join the Track team?
Track is a no cut sport. Before you start practice, you must have a completed physical and parental permission form on file with the athletics office. Physical forms are good for one calendar year. If you do not have these forms completed, then please do so as soon as possible, but also give your name to (coach) Barry Haworth so that we know you’re interested in the team.
2.
How does practice work?
Length of practice: Practice can last up to two hours. We begin right after school and should typically finish by 5:00 p.m. On 1:35 Wednesdays, we begin immediately after school and are usually done by about 3:35-3:45 p.m.
Attendance: depending upon the requirements of her training group, each girl is expected to regularly attend practice.
Practice Groups: all athletes will practice with a specific “event group”. E.g., shot putters will typically train with the “throwers” group, distance runners with the “distance” group, and so on. Once you decide on an event, then you must decide how many days you’ll be showing up for practice (and whether you’ll be eligible for a Varsity letter by the end of the season) by picking a “training group” for your event.
The specifics as to how each training group works for each event will be determined by the various event coaches, but here’s a general description of these two groups.
Competitive Training Group: requires a commitment of attending practice up to 5-6 days per week. Girls in this group are eligible for a Varsity letter if they meet our Varsity lettering standards. If any girls from this group do not meet the Varsity lettering standards, then they’ll receive a JV certificate. “Talent” is not a prerequisite for being in this group, willingness and the ability to commit to a 5-6 day practice schedule is the only requirement.
General Training Group: requires a commitment of attending practice on Monday through Thursday. Girls in this group will only receive a JV certificate (i.e. girls in the General Training Group are not eligible for a Varsity letter).
Weather-related changes in practice: unless conditions are expected to be hazardous and clearly unsafe, we will not cancel practice on a school day. Rain and cold are not necessarily “hazardous”, and we may certainly practice under those conditions. If parents have a concern about their daughter practicing in certain types of weather, then we always defer to parental judgment – but ask that parents speak directly with their daughter’s coach.
Road races: you may not compete in a road race during the season (e.g. the Mini) unless your coach gives you permission. As a general rule, we do not allow our athletes to compete in in-season road races. If you do so and say nothing, then you’ll be dropped from the roster.
3. What about competing in meets?
· Everyone on the team will compete in meets. There are no exceptions.
· Girls in the competitive training group may compete in any of the meets on our schedule. We will typically enter the best available girls in the Saturday invitational meets, but these girls may also run in our Tuesday and Wednesday meets.
· Girls in the general training group will only be asked to compete in our master schedule and all-comers meets – that typically fall on Tuesdays.
An expected 2008 meet schedule is provided on the next page of this handout. Master schedule and all-comers meets are denoted with a “*”.
4. What is the Varsity lettering standard?
To earn a JV certificate or Varsity letter, a girl must meet both a participation standard and a performance standard. Varsity letters carry a higher standard.
